Conclusion
"The current results confirm the antioxidative properties of alpha-lipoic acid, and indicate a possible use of alpha-lipoic acid to improve EPO production and skeletal muscle regeneration through changes in the RN/OS ratio at rest and after exercise", the researchers concluded.

Who new? Very interesting find! I know Mike Arnold is BIG on beat root for the same reasons.

I've been taking ALA since like 2000.

I've used racemic and r-ALA back and forth. Never seen much of a difference, though I know there is a bunch of crap sold out there, and it needs to be handled properly. I used exclusively r-ALA for the longest time. The last few years I've just been using TN's 300mg ALA.

I just read through quickly, but I wonder if they used racemic or the R-enantiomer ALA? If they used racemic, then that is pretty cool.

Nice find. I haven't used it in a few years but may add it back in.

Not used this in awhile. Anything that helps turn glucose into energy is going to be good for most of us. I used to have it with my high carb meals.

How many 300mg caps do you use each day? I have a friend who uses a tonne of it and says it can have a big effect on your physique. Not sure about dose but he was taking this stuff with every meal.

This is the main reason I used it. Most GDA products contain ALA for that very reason.

Good info. Interestingly the plant echinacea has been shown to raise EPO in numerous studies. In the below study it also didn't effect rbc's, hct and hgb. It's a good immune booster so could also be adding in if someone wanted to increase EPO levels in the body.

The effect of 4 wk of oral echinacea supplementation on serum erythropoietin and indices of erythropoietic status.

Whitehead MT1, Martin TD, Scheett TP, Webster MJ.

Author information

The purpose of this investigation was to determine whether echinacea supplementation results in alterations of erythroid growth factors and erythropoietic status. Twenty-four men age 24.9 +/- 4.2 y, height 1.7 +/- 0.8 m, weight 87.9 +/- 14.6 kg, and 19.3% +/- 6.5% body fat were grouped using a double-blind design and self- administered an 8000-mg/d dose of either echinacea (ECH) or placebo (PLA) in 5 x 400 mg x 4 times/d for 28 d. Blood samples were collected and analyzed for red blood cells (RBCs), hematocrit (Hct), hemoglobin (Hb), mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular hemoglobin content, prostaglandin E2, ferritin, erythropoietin (EPO), interleukin 3 (IL-3), and granulocyte-macrophage-colony-stimulating factor using automated flow cytometry and ELISA. ANOVA was used to determine significant differences (P ? 0.05). EPO was greater (P < 0.001) in ECH at Days 7, 14, and 21 and reflected a 44%, 63%, and 36% increase, respectively. IL-3 was greater (P = 0.011) in ECH at Days 14 and 21, which indicated a 65% and 73% increase, respectively. These data indicate that ECH supplementation resulted in an increase in EPO and IL-3 but did not significantly alter RBCs, Hb, or Hct.

Would that, in turn, raise hematocrit/hemoglobin levels? If that's the case, I need to stay the heck away from ALA
