It's about time. They are going to have some distention at that size but over the last 10 years it's gotten really bad. You have guys on stage with 40 inch waists. If Roelly can do it all of them can.

It should be controlled so it's a step in the right direction. Although the open should be about mass monsters especially now we have classic physique. To me the likes of Roelly is what the open should be about.

I go back and forth on the whole thing. I love mass monsters, but I preferred the classic look for BB. At first I was worried that classic category would just be a side show, but it seems to be gaining a little popularity. With the two split out, I don't see a reason to pull towards the middle of the road.

I agree. The open isn't just about mass but that should be one of the most important things. Classic is there for a reason so the open should just carry on as normal. They should still mark down the bubble guts as they have gotten out of hand.

Rhoden deserved to win it this year. But I look at him as the smallest someone can be to win the open. The guts are bad but it's nothing new and has been that way for years. Good move to make sure it doesn't get worse.

It’s unbelievable when I here people say that these competitors shouldn’t be penalized for having distended mid sections. Really??

Having a huge, distended midsection shouldn’t be a necessary trade off to being a mass monster. Regardless of which class a competitor is in, bodybuilding is still about possessing the most ideal physique possible. I can’t see how having a huge bloated gut could ever be an acceptable component of an ideal physique, regardless of how big that competitor is.

These moves by the IFBB and the judges are necessary to in order to make bodybuilding more legitimate, and to hold competitors to the ideals that the concept of competitive bodybuilding was founded on. I applaud them for finally taking an objective look at themselves and how they had let things get so far out of hand, and finally pulling the reigns in.

I agree. Some will have some distention but it has become so bad they need to start punishing it more through lower placings. No bodybuilder should have a huge gut on stage.

I feel the same. Although the guts do need to be reigned in. Classic will slowly become bigger over the years and the quality of it's competitors keeps getting better.

I saw a 212 pro show recently and I couldn't not notice the guts on most of the competitors. I can also see classic becoming the most popular division over the next 10 years.

I get it, its bodybuilding, size is important, but we have lost all sight of aesthetics. That bulging gut should be dropping people to last place

I also see classic taking more Popularity than anything within the next 5 years. But I think there’s multiple reason for that. For one it’s more appealing to a lotta people. Two it’s more logical for a lot of people cause it’s not run by mass monsters and it doesn’t take 10+ years to gain the size most pros need to turn pro. Because of the above reasons there’s gonna be more people willing to try the sport out which means bigger talent pool to pick from and makes the sport much more competitive. And with more and more talent coming in means the sport won’t get boring or stale. They’ll be constant fresh faces and physiques popping up that keeps them from having multiple repeat Olympia winners and completion will constantly change. Example is look at first 2 years classic started and the guys who were at the top then. Now it’s totally different faces and those old top guys aren’t even near the top anymore.

Good post, it should be mandatory reading for all pro bodybuilders. Regarding the gut issue, if I ever manage to see a heavyweight doing a vacuum I think tears of joy will inundate the room.

Definitely. I was there and had Phil winning. Sucks for all the guys that have pushed food so dam hard for all the years. I’m going to miss the mass monsters being on top

If PHIL's gut was in check, I still think he would be reigning MR.O. I want to see the size too but not at the expense of the big turtle shell ab***inals.

Yea, outside of his gut region, he would still be Mr. O imo too.

The next two or three years should be interesting. Phil could retain his title...or never win again. I don't see Rhoden staying Mr. O. Unfortunately, I haven't seen him doing much as Mr. O either even though he talked about being a much better ambassador.

I thought that myself. He spoke about how he was going to be a great ambassador and he hasn't done anything. Rhoden is champion but next year it's Phil's to lose again. If Phil comes in shredded with no bubble gut he will win. He shouldn't even worry about size because Rhoden is the smallest champion for many years. Now if Ramy comes in shredded that could change everything but he hasn't come close in past attempts.
