Firefighter busted for $347K steroid haul

A firefighter who is also a bodybuilder and moonlights as a stripper was arrested Wednesday when Customs officers discovered a box from China containing $347,000 worth of anabolic steroids addressed to him, law enforcement officials said.

Police charged Rodney St. Cloud, 30, with criminal possession of a controlled substance.

According to a spokeswoman for Bridget Brennan, the special narcotics prosecutor, both St. Cloud and his wife, Stacey St. Cloud, could face seven years in prison if convicted of the felony offense.

Instead of seizing the box of steroids that was discovered at Kennedy Airport, Customs officers and Police Department narcotics officers decided to execute a controlled delivery.

An undercover narcotics detective delivered the box to Stacey St. Cloud at a Midtown photo lab where she works.

After she signed for the delivery and opened the box, the officers identified themselves and "interviewed" her, police said. They found 20,000 units of dynoball, known as D-Ball, and 60 units of liquid human growth hormone, police said.

They also found a handwritten note inside the box with the words "For Rodney," a law enforcement official said.

The officers proceeded to Fire Department headquarters in Downtown Brooklyn where they arrested St. Cloud. He has been on desk duty there since a similar arrest last year.

A Bronx grand jury declined to indict St. Cloud after the first arrest, but disciplinary action has been pending from the department since he failed a urine test last month, officials said. Sources said he faced termination for violating the zero-tolerance policy on illegal drugs.

Before his arrest last year, St. Cloud, who joined the FDNY two years ago, was assigned to Engine 43 in the Bronx. He was placed on a 30-day suspension following Wednesday's arrest.

St. Cloud finished 12th in last year's Mr. Olympia bodybuilding contest. He is known as "Hot Rod" at a Bronx club called the New Savoy, where he works as a stripper. He is featured this year as Mr. April in the Fire Department's Calendar of Heroes. In the picture, he is shirtless with suspenders, posing in Yankee Stadium showing off his rippling muscles.

St. Cloud's Web site lists autographed pictures of himself for sale, "only $10 each."

New York Cops Arrest Firefighter For Steroids

March 25, 2004 -- Next month, his rippling muscles will bulge out of the official FDNY calendar, but now, Mr. April 2004 is striking a much less glamorous pose - for a police mug shot.

Pin-up firefighter Rodney St. Cloud, who moonlights as a stripper under the name "Hot Rod," was arrested yesterday afternoon at Fire Department headquarters in Downtown Brooklyn for possession of "controlled substances," cops said.

Law-enforcement sources told The Post a 5-pound package containing $347,000 worth of anabolic steroids had been seized upon delivery under St. Cloud's name to a Midtown photo lab where his wife, Stacy, works. She was not arrested.

U.S. Customs officials had alerted city cops to the shipment from China, which sources said contained some 20,000 Dianabol pills - a popular but potentially dangerous steroid known as "D-bols" in weightlifter parlance - and 60 vials of liquid human growth hormone.

They said the bulky bodybuilder had been the subject of a major investigation involving the NYPD, Fire Department, U.S. Customs, state Special Narcotics prosecutors and the city Department of Investigation.

He is expected to be arraigned on the charges today in Manhattan Criminal Court.

Last May, criminal charges against St. Cloud for steroid possession were dropped because there was no proof of intent to supply. But the Bravest beefcake was still banished to desk duty when he tested positive for the drugs.

The FDNY would not comment, saying only that St. Cloud had been suspended from duty.

"He's one bad apple and it shouldn't take away from the good work the calendar does to support fire-safety education, which, in turn, saves firefighters' lives," said an FDNY official.
