Bonita Springs man charged with possessing, smuggling steroids - NBC-2.com WBBH News for Fort Myers, Cape Coral & Naples, Florida

BONITA SPRINGS, Fla. -

A Bonita Springs man is accused of peddling steroids, disguised as harmless protein.

Authorities became suspicious of a package from China sent to 34-year-old Robert Eckland when one powdered substance was found to be steroids.

The steroids were packaged next to Whey Protein to disguise it.

Lee County's Highway Interdiction Unit responded to Eckland's home and discovered even more of the substance.

Deputies arrested Eckland Tuesday, but it wasn't until they searched his CubeSmart storage unit that they found syringes, steroids, marijuana, thousands in cash, and a gun.

Eckland is believed to have used the material to produce steroids that he would later sell across Lee County and beyond.

Local trainers said that unfortunately, steroids are readily available in Southwest Florida.

"It becomes an addiction for people. Not necessarily the drug, but the desire to get bigger," said John Rosabella, owner of Better Everyday Fitness.

Authorities also charged Ekland for smuggling the steroids into the state and possessing the drugs less than 1,000 feet from a school.
