I hear you, they have definately caused alot of problems when they gain power, which may have a lot to do with their attempt to convert a liberalized goverment/economy to a more socialist one in one term. Impossible to say the least. I left BC because of its sorry economy at the end of 1999 (I am a born and breed British Columbian I moved out in 1999 not into the province in 1999). I purchased an apartment in Chilliwack in 1994 for $100,000 and had to finally sell it in 2003 for $85,000 after paying the mortgage (well my renters did) for 9 years, so I was a little ticked about losing money there. Listen there is not love for the NDP here I am just trying to make the point that choice is important in a democracy. I don't want to drag our American friends into it but their system is a 2 party system. Remember the Simpsons episode where the presidential candidates, Bill Clinton and Ross Perot (or someone like that) turned out to be aliens, after they pulled their masks off they were laughing saying, you have to elect one of us, its a 2 party system! Even though i don't like the NDP as a party they are necessary to keep the balance in a democractic system. When one party gains to much power they do whatever they want, and can push through any agenda they please. Lets remember our history here, in Germany in the 1930's the National Socialist Party (Nazis) gained a vast majority of the seats in the Reichstag, low and behold within 6 years we had WWII. You always need a strong counterforce to any movement otherwise you end up with an tyranical system. Now I voted conservative in the last election, which I am not wholly happy with but i felt that we needed a change, and with a minority goverment the very right wing policies they have held in the past will be kept in check. Anyways I guess we will see.

Ya thats our legacy of universal medicare, unemployment insurance and welfare. Good and bad I guess. It is nice to have that security but it sure costs alot!
