Adaptive Thermogenesis Is Real And Almost Everyone Uses It Wrong

There is a real phenomenon underneath the phrase metabolic damage, and it is called adaptive thermogenesis. Resting expenditure falls further than the loss of tissue mass alone would predict, and part of that drop persists after the diet ends. It was documented decades ago in controlled starvation research and reappears in modern weight loss studies.

The two mistakes run in opposite directions. One side denies it exists and insists the arithmetic is purely calories in and out, which ignores that the out side is not a constant. The other side treats it as permanent and catastrophic, which justifies abandoning any deficit and blaming a broken metabolism for what is often just an unrecovered diet.

What the evidence actually supports is more mundane. The adaptation is real, it is partly reversible with time and adequate intake, and its magnitude varies enormously between people. It is not a mystical state and it is not nothing. It sits in the middle, which is unsatisfying and also where the data lives.

For the people who have come out the other side of a long deficit. How long did it take before eating felt normal again, and did anyone track resting expenditure or body temperature rather than just going by feel.
