We had a "bench off" contest in the gym yesterday. I weighed in at 221, the range of guys was 176lbs to 355lbs. My main competitors were 322lbs and 295lbs so I wasn't sure if I could pull it off. 1st round of 1 rep max was 355lbs which I took off the rack with ease but lowered it too quickly in the hopes of a quick lift and blew it. Many tried the 1st round but no one pressed it. 2nd round was 345lbs which I nailed, knowing I could have got that 355. One other guy (322lbs) got that weight and I tied the unlimited class for 1st.

The 225 rep out contest followed. I actually repped out 275 and 255 to try and get a workout in also. I got 21 reps (a new PR it used to be 17) so I'm guessing if I started cold maybe another rep or two.

Someone told me King Kamali only got 16 reps of 225 in a contest?? I've also seen NFL players getting 40+

Best rep out ever at 225 was about this time last year. 32 reps (no bouncing off chest). Weight was approx. 270 lbs. Height 6'-4".
A bench contest for the gym is a great idea. I think I need to run this by the gym staff.

Mine was 27 and hell did my chest burn! I hate doing high reps but my training partner wanted to do it. Not a way to build bulk! Good for stamina though. I was weighing about 202 lbs then (about 4 months ago).

Ummm...bro, I don't think you are even in the same ball park as "weak"...by that I mean your lifting stats are impressive. Keep up the good work!

I managed 24 reps as college freshman.

2 wks ago after working up to a 425lb 2-board press with chains I did a 'down set' with 315 (no boards/chains) and managed to get 16 reps before calling it quits. Cramped up so bad I'll never fuck around and do something like that again. It probably scraped 20lbs off my 1rm from the unneccessary CNS/muscular trauma. I was "on" that day and I think 30-35 reps with 225 would have been doable.

RE: gym contests
My old gym had a yearly bench contest but it was lame--it was a "bench your bodyweight the most times" type of deal. The same 5'2" 160lb asian guy with t-rex arms won every year. I went the first year and only managed to get 205 for 20 something reps (back in '99). The leverage boy did an insane number of reps, I forget if it was 50 or 60 but he had no competition. And I'm not kidding when I tell you he could barely unrack the bar in its lowest position b/c his arms were so short and gripped the bar illegally wide (dumb gym dudes had no idea what a legal PL grip is). I was LOL when he had to move his grip in to get it out (they didn't allow hand-offs). Anyway they had some sweet prizes the year I went. After I heard "the defending champ" was doing it the following year I said 'fuck that'.

Looks like im the weakling here. Last winter doing more of a powerlifting routine my 1 rep max was 305lbs at a body weight of 170lbs. I then dropped it to 225lbs and maxed out at 14 clean reps (still my personal best). I'll see how much i can do after me first cycle, hehe.

It never occured to me to test how many reps I could do at 225 lbs. Is that a standard benchmark? I'll try that on my next cycle. My bench is way down right now post cycle.

Never really pushed myself too hard on bench for reps. Deadlifted 315 for a set of 20 was about my best strength endurance feat. I pretty much collapsed into a heaving pile on the floor trying to suck in some oxygen. I actually think the oxygen debt created was what stopped me rather than muscular failure.

Yes, repping that high is pure aerobic exercise. That is why I have only done it once, it serves no real purpose for building strength or muscle. It would be goo for endurance related sports, MMA comes to mind! For a bodybuilder/powerlifter I think it is detrimental not beneficial!

Right now I'm about 184, I reped 315 10 times, and then after 3 min rest I busted out 225 20 reps. I do love the test.
