The presence of estrogen, the main sex hormone in women, has been traditionally thought to lower men's libidos, but new research proves otherwise. Findings from a study at Massachusetts General Hospital published in the New England Journal of Medicine have shown that reducing estrogen in men actually lowered their libidos.
While the findings are not likely to alter current hormone therapies, they provide a greater understanding for men seeking testosterone therapies.
New research in hormones
The new study has shown that a balance of estrogen and testosterone in men is essential to a healthy libido, according to*lab tests*on mice and clinical trials in humans. With both mice and humans, cutting estrogen produced a drop in libido, even as testosterone was added. This matches anecdotal evidence of men undergoing female hormone therapies who experienced an increase in libido along with estrogen.
For the study, researchers examined more than 300 men aged 20 to 50. Half of the men were either given a placebo or a testosterone-boosting gel, while the other half received either a placebo or a combination of a testosterone-boosting gel and a drug to reduce estrogen. The men who were given the estrogen-reducing drug saw a strong drop-off in libido, according to the study.
Excess testosterone in men can be transformed into estrogen so current practices will likely remain the same for certain drugs to lower estrogen.
I have always thought recently people overuse anti e's ,which some are very powerful ,so this is something to look at if you have libido issues on trt replacement ..
